2023 Inspire(d) Photographers
When we switched printers in 2023, we decided to start featuring local photographers’ work in the Center Spread spot in each Inspire(d) Magazine. We wanted to show off the beauty, fun, and uniqueness of the Driftless Region through these talented photographers’ photos. Our 2023 Inspire(d)’s featured a truly gorgeous selection of images from some amazing Driftless photographers.
We loved how these photos have brought the beauty of the Driftless in each season to our readers, and have continued the tradition in Inspire(d) ever since (see the 2024 photographers).
And now, check out the 2023 photographers here!

Summer 2023: Charlie Langton

Photographer Charlie Langton writes:
I took this photo on a late-summer evening. I often walk down to the Decorah Prairie around dusk because the songbirds are out feeding at that time. The prairie is anchored by two wonderful oak trees, but I confess that I’m partial to the one at the east end. The sinking light was playing music on the land when I shot this from the dike. Fall 2023: Bob Modersohn / DriftlessMode

Photographer Bob Modersohn writes:
There’s splashy color most years here – if you hit it right. Orange is the featured color in these trees over Mount Hosmer and the Lansing riverfront. An S&S rental houseboat heading for the dock on the Big River’s main channel adds detail. Photo made looking upriver from the Driftless Area Education and Visitors Center south of Lansing at Columbus Road. See more of Bob’s work at driftlessmode.smugmug.com

Winter 2023-24: Larry Reis

Photographer Larry Reis writes:
Naturalist Larry Reis photographed this red-headed woodpecker at Lake Meyer near Calmar, Iowa, in January of 2023. “We woke up to freezing fog for the second day in a row,” he writes on his Flickr page, where (as of winter 2023) he’s posted more than 16,000 photos (viewed more than 16.2 million times). “The landscape looks almost magical when everything is coated with sparkling ice crystals and this red-headed woodpecker was out enjoying the view.” Read more about Larry and his 30-year career educating about and protecting natural resources in an Inspire(d) story here.
